Maybe you can take some comfort in this: the administrator of at least one Facebook group of Star Trek fans issued the following edict: “No DISCO spoilers. Watch as SFX makeup transforms Doug Jones into Saru for Star Trek: Discovery. “We have a strong global and local content pipeline that positions us for success across our regions, and repatriating beloved series like Star Trek: Discovery for Paramount+ is another step forward as we bring fans more must-watch series worldwide.” “As we rapidly expand our global streaming footprint, we are bringing more of our top titles home to ViacomCBS for Paramount+ markets around the world,” ViacomCBS Networks International streaming boss Kelly Day told Deadline. ViacomCBS anticipates the streaming platform to be available in about 45 markets within the next year as part of its accelerated plan. ViacomCBS, fresh off its consolidating merger, obviously wants to keep that money flowing in from overseas in-house.Īccording to Deadline, of the more than 20 countries that will have access to Paramount+ outside North America next year, the first markets to stream Star Trek: Discovery on Paramount+ in 2022 will be the U.K., Germany, Ireland, Austria and Switzerland. Until now, Netflix has been the exclusive home of Star Trek: Discovery for global audiences. Deadline reported the deal was believed to be “in the healthy six figures.” But with each adventure costing CBS a reportedly skyhigh $8M per episode to produce, former honcho Les Moonves found a willing partner in Netflix, reportedly striking a deal in which Netflix paid 100% of its entire production budget in exchange for international distribution rights. Screenrant’s Thomas Bacon further explains that when Star Trek: Discovery launched in 2017, it was only available on Paramount+’s predecessor, CBS All Access, and only in the United States The show was originally not available overseas. As Screenrant reported, ViacomCBS’s “logic is flawed, because in pulling the show from Netflix at such short notice they've burned any sense of goodwill among fans.” I’m hoping for the latter, though realistically, keeping my expectations low because I know there’s a bigger story to tell in Star Trek: Discovery.ViacomCBS’s deal means fans who were watching the show on Netflix won’t be able to watch season four until it becomes available sometime in early 2022, and even then, they also must subscribe to the Paramount+ streaming service. Of course, we could be pleasantly surprised and see that the two progressed much further since we last saw them. His obligations, paired with T’Rina’s, might make it hard for them to connect in Season 5 as much as fans may want. The point being, Saru is juggling a lot of plates, and on top of all that, he’s dating the President of one of the Federation’s core nations. Viewers last saw him serving as Captain Michael Burnham’s First Officer aboard the Discovery, though it’s unknown if he’s off elsewhere in Season 5, back with the High Council, or even commanding his own ship once again as a Captain of Starfleet. Saru, of course, has his obligations to Starfleet as well as a member of the Ba’ul and Kelpian High Council. ![]() He’s not alone in that sentiment, as many loved seeing Saru find love with the Ni’Var leader, but given the newness of it all and how slow they were taking things, it seemed possible they wouldn’t last.Īssuming Saru and T’Rina are still a couple in Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, it would be interesting to see just how much things progressed. He’s clearly a fan of his character’s courtship. My biggest concern, going into Season 5, was, ‘Will my romance with President T’Rina, my lovely Vulcan lady, still continue?’ I was happy to hear the answer, but I’ll let you figure out what that is, when you see Season 5.ĭoug Jones didn’t come out and explicitly say that Saru and T’Rina are still together in Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, but it’s hard to read it any other way based on that comment. That is, provided Doug Jones is saying what it sounds like in a recent interview with Collider, in which he commented on what’s going on with Saru in T’Rina in Season 5 in broad strokes:Ĭhange is always afoot, for the story and for the characters, individually, and Saru is included in that. For anyone worried that Saru’s budding romance with Ni’Var President T’Rina would fizzle and fade before the beginning of Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, worry no longer. ![]()
